Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2027? What the CSK CEO Said
Will MS Dhoni play IPL 2027? Nobody knows yet, including Dhoni. On Tuesday, 13 October 2026, Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said he feels there is a chance Dhoni keeps playing for the team. Dhoni, now 45, did not play a single match in IPL 2026. Here is what has been said so far, and what happens next.
What did the CSK CEO say about Dhoni?
Kasi Viswanathan told local media in Chennai that the decision is Dhoni's alone and the team leaves it to him. "It's a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know," he said, as reported by India Today.
Did Dhoni play in IPL 2026?
No. Dhoni did not feature in any match in IPL 2026 because of injury concerns, a season many had expected to be his farewell. He stayed with the squad for most of the season, trained with the team and supported them from the dugout. CSK finished eighth in the 10-team table.
What did Suresh Raina say?
Raina said he told Dhoni that IPL 2026 "won't count" and that he should come back in 2027. According to Raina, Dhoni was cautious and pointed to the physical demands at his age, but said "Let me see". Raina read that as a reason for optimism.
What is next for IPL 2027?
The BCCI has postponed the joint meeting with IPL franchise owners, broadcasters and state associations that was set for Thursday, 15 October 2026 in Mumbai. The reason given is the Prime Minister's felicitation of India's Asian Games medallists in New Delhi on the same day, plus requests from some stakeholders. No new date has been announced, according to Business Standard. Franchises are preparing retention lists, and CSK are also planning life beyond Dhoni: they brought in Sanju Samson ahead of IPL 2026, and he scored 477 runs in 14 matches.
